Our Approach

Our overarching philosophy can be summed up in a quote from Albert Einstein: “We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” We always aim to help our customers do better things, rather than just doing things better.

We always consider the entirety of the socio-technical system, this can include:

  • the purpose and intent of the system as a whole

  • the environment within which it operates

  • the human operators, their skills, knowledge, capabilities and abilities

  • their interaction with the system, both human-to-human and human-to-equipment/machine

  • their tasks and activities, both cognitive and physical

  • the team make-up and structure

  • the design and functionality of the equipment

Although the specific requirements of a project will change the emphasis, focus and amount of work conducted in relation to these different aspects of the socio-technical system, our holistic approach supports the assessment of ripple effects resulting from changes to any one of these elements. When making recommendations for change, this facilitates the investigation of overarching considerations, such as the flexibility and resulting resilience of the system and its overall efficiency and operational performance. These activities are grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the research findings that apply to that area.
