Designing for the 21st
Century
This ESPRC and AHRB initiative was established to
support research that makes connections between academics,
industrialists and consumers. It aims to promote the
formation of new communities of design researchers, design
practitioners and end-users of design; build a common reference
framework and shared understanding of theoretical concepts,
culture, languages and methods within different design communities
and stimulate new ways of designing thinking that will meet the
challenges of designing for 21st Century society.

Ideal States
Ideal States was a year long EPSRC and AHRB
research project funded through the Designing for the
21st Century Initiative. It brought together the fields
of design and healthcare and aimed to understand and question the
fundamental assumptions and philosophies of each. Its objective was
to find a way of working together that will allow improved
collaboration between the two fields at a point in history where
the demographic profile of the population is ageing and posing
particular challenges for the future. The core research group
included The Glasgow School of Art’s School of Design, The
University of Glasgow’s Faculty of Medicine and HFE
Solutions. A funding application has been made to extend this
work.
